“Durham High School’s Marketing Team on a Mission”
Girls in the school’s new Digital Marketing Club are learning to create a careers-focused webpage on the school’s website.
The club, which meets every Thursday lunchtime, has eight members from across the Senior Department. The girls are expanding their skills in market research, organisation, teamwork, data analysis, graphic design and presentation.
This term, the project is divided into four phases: creating a project brief, analysing competitors, conducting market research and surveys, and finally drafting a design based on their findings.
During the design phase, the girls started by outlining the website structure. This was guided by insights from their research, and the requirements outlined in the project brief. They also gained knowledge about website infrastructure, including elements such as titles, subtitles, calls-to-action (CTAs), and layout positioning.
Linnea Eriksson, 15, said: “We’ve been working on ideas for the school website and the skills we’ve picked up are undeniably important for our future careers. I want to be a physiotherapist and run my own business, so it’s really important that I learn the digital marketing skills to be able to promote myself in the future.
“The club is amazing because it’s not just about business. It’s about the creativity behind what you see on a screen – the art of marketing, building life skills, constructing visions over time, pitching proposals, and working with a constant flow of new ideas. It’s great because Miss Morales-Salum gives us the tools we need, but we are the ones who come up with the ideas.”
The pupils meet in different groups each week to work through the phases, hoping to have the website draft completed before Christmas. With a theme focused on careers, the girls aim to create a careers guidance section and an events page for future careers fairs.
Omhle Sibanda, 16, said: “I love being able to work with students from all year groups. Collaborating with the younger girls is brilliant because some of them are new to the school and have ideas that we’ve not considered.
“I want to be a pilot and I feel that having a careers section the website will help me and other girls work towards their chosen pathways.”
Aspiring doctor, Nada Hussein, 14, added: “It’s good to be able to learn how to be relevant and resourceful in the world of marketing, and the skills we learn are digital but also relate to many different careers. I want to be a doctor and the independence we have to make our own decisions in the club is definitely an essential skill for that.”
The girls will be making their page using tools such as Canva, and with guidance from, Miss Morales-Salum, the school’s Business teacher and careers leader.
As creator of the club, Miss Morales-Salum hopes to encourage the pupils to grow their talents in leadership and creativity – qualities that are fostered throughout the school’s extracurricular programme.
She added: “My work with the girls has been incredibly rewarding. Through project-based learning, they’re building essential research and analytical skills, breaking down complex goals into achievable steps. It’s exciting to watch their growth and see how their hard work shapes the final results!”
Headmistress of Durham High School, Michelle Hill, said: “We’re incredibly proud of the girls in our Digital Marketing Club for showcasing exceptional leadership, creativity, and a passion for developing skills for the modern world. It’s inspiring to see our students collaborating across year groups and embodying the spirit of our Durham High family. Well done, girls!”
