Durham High School has been praised for its high-quality education, strong leadership and exceptional care for pupils in its latest Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) report, following a full inspection from 30 September to 2 October 2025.
Inspectors confirmed that all statutory standards were met and highlighted the school’s strong academic performance, excellent pastoral care, inclusive community values, and highly effective safeguarding practices.
The report commends Durham High School, saying “Collaborative, positive relationships between pupils and staff throughout the school community support academic success and pupils’ wellbeing”.
Teaching staff are praised for helping pupils “to develop strategies to build confidence and self-esteem”. This, in turn, leads to sought-after behaviours that help all to improve: “Teamwork and friendships are fostered between pupils of different ages, and this contributes to each pupil’s personal development”.
Inspectors observed that the school’s aims and ethos are embedded throughout daily life, fully promoting pupils’ wellbeing”. The report adds that: “Pupils receive highly personalised and precise guidance and feedback, which has a positive impact on their understanding and continued progression”, resulting in excellent outcomes at GCSE and A Level and strong preparation for future education, training and employment.
Inspectors also highlighted the respectful relationships between staff and pupils, the strength of careers education, the wide range of extra-curricular opportunities, and a school culture rooted in “kindness, confidence and community engagement”.
It said: “Staff know pupils well and support them with kindness and understanding.”
The report praises the school’s proactive approach to inclusion, noting pupil-led initiatives that celebrate diversity and develop leadership across all age groups.
