Come and play at one of our Outdoor Tots sessions

Durham High School was delighted to welcome BBC Strictly Come Dancing star and Olivier Award winner Layton Williams for a visit that offered pupils an inspiring insight into the professional performing arts industry.

The afternoon began with a fun, high-energy dance workshop which had some of our pupils (and some staff members) fully getting into the Strictly spirit. Layton’s choreography inspired the year groups in attendance who committed wholeheartedly to the performance. The session encouraged pupils to refine their technique while embracing the expressive and collaborative nature of dance.

Following the workshop, Layton took part in a Q&A session with pupils, sharing his journey into the performing arts. He spoke about attending an open audition for Billy Elliot at the age of 11, the dedication and resilience required to succeed in the industry, and his path to becoming an Olivier Award winner. Layton emphasised the importance of being a ‘triple threat’, developing versatility across acting, singing and dance in order to become a well-rounded performer.

Layton also provided valuable insight into life on the West End stage, discussing the unique experience of performing to a live audience and the immediacy of feedback that makes theatre such a rewarding art form. He highlighted that a successful career in the performing arts is built on passion, perseverance and authenticity, both on and off the stage.

The visit offered pupils a meaningful opportunity to engage with a leading figure in the performing arts and to gain a deeper understanding of the professional pathways available within the industry. Experiences such as this reflect Durham High School’s commitment to providing enriching opportunities beyond the classroom and to nurturing confidence, creativity and ambition in every pupil.

Thank you to Layton Williams for an inspirational afternoon.
